Head Massage - Basic and Advanced Techniques
Next we come to work the area of the jaw; this can be incredibly tender so be aware of the pressure that you are using—you need to ensure that you are not pressing the cheek into the teeth. Place your middle three fingers together and very gently make circles across the cheeks from the corner of the lips and moving outward toward the jaw; repeat this two or three times. You may become aware of an increase in tension as you get toward the jaw and your clients may complain that it becomes very tender around this area; this may be because they have been gritting or grinding their teeth.
Place the index finger of each hand at the center of the jawline on the very tip of the chin. Use your thumbs on the very edge of the chin underneath but do not apply any pressure with your thumbs; there are lots of glands under the chin and you need to avoid pressing on these—the use of the thumb is just to keep the finger at the top steady.
Using the same action as you did on the centerline of the head, press gently with your fingers following the line of the jaw, outward toward the jaw joint. Your client should be able to feel the pressure but it should not be unduly painful. However, as you get toward the jaw joint, it is likely to become more tender. Mre and more hotel massage London therapists use this technique.
Placing your middle three fingers together, massage in small circles around the whole jaw joint area. You will feel the two lines of teeth as you massage; again, be careful not to press the cheek into the teeth and avoid pressing into the temples. You are applying a little more pressure here than elsewhere on the face as your aim is to begin to release the jaw tension. Ask your clients to open their mouth just a little so that the jaw joint is relaxed, and work with small circles into the joint.
The area immediately in front of the joint is likely to be more tender than most areas, but it is important not to avoid this area as working here is critical to releasing the tension. If you are working professionally, and if your client is not wearing dentures, you can apply moderate pressure here by holding the point on the cheeks just inside where the jaw has opened—hold for no more than four seconds as this will be a tender spot.
