We use our arms and shoulders in so many ways each day that most people probably don’t give them much thought. Swinging a tennis racket or softball bat, sitting at a desk typing, cleaning around the house, and holding a cell phone against your head are all activities that involve your arms and shoulders. And because we do use them so frequently, arms and shoulders almost always benefit from massage. There are three primary nerves in the arm. One of them, the ulnar nerve, runs from the clavicle (collarbone) to the little finger. The ulnar nerve is almost completely unprotected where it runs over the elbow, and that’s why hitting your “funny bone” is so painful. What you’re actually hitting is that nerve. That’s just one reason to be careful when massaging around the elbow and shoulder joints. A second reason is that care needs to be taken around joints in general.
