Massage services: Arms and shoulders

Imagine
We use our arms and shoulders in so many ways each day that most people probably don’t give them much thought. Swinging a tennis racket or softball bat, sitting at a desk typing, cleaning around the house, and holding a cell phone against your head are all activities that involve your arms and shoulders. And because we do use them so frequently, arms and shoulders almost always benefit from massage. There are three primary nerves in the arm. One of them, the ulnar nerve, runs from the clavicle (collarbone) to the little finger. The ulnar nerve is almost completely unprotected where it runs over the elbow, and that’s why hitting your “funny bone” is so painful. What you’re actually hitting is that nerve. That’s just one reason to be careful when massaging around the elbow and shoulder joints. A second reason is that care needs to be taken around joints in general. It can be easy to force a joint beyond its range of motion, so always move the limbs gently and slowly. Experienced ...

Deep Tissue Massage: What’s All About

Imagine
The techniques and different emphasis of these deep tissue methods may offer a profound reorientation in the way you work. You may find that the emphasis upon patiently lengthening tissue will empower you to achieve goals with your clients that were inconceivable before. The alleviation of pain, bringing about better posture, more flexibility, and fluid movement—these are all potential goals that are possible to achieve with deep tissue skills. Whatever the emphasis, it is hoped that the techniques learned in this manual will be useful to a wide range of therapists as they tailor this knowledge to their own individual definition of massage. To increase your deep tissue skills? Check out the requirements for employment in most spas and medical settings such as chiropractors’ offices or physical therapy clinics. Most of these now require a deep tissue certificate. Massage is no longer looked at as an indulgence to be appreciated by a few people who have excess time or money. Now ...

Feet Massage Treatments Overview

Imagine
Most people really enjoy having their feet massaged. That’s no surprise, because a good foot massage feels great; so good, in fact, that your whole session could begin and end there. Entire books have been written about the subject of massaging the feet. (The alternative medical field of reflexology is based on the belief that areas on the foot correspond to areas of the body, and that manipulating areas of the feet can have beneficial health effects.) And hour-long foot massages are not uncommon in the spa world. Before you begin, make sure your hands and your subject’s feet are clean. (You may want to skip this portion of the massage if your subject has athlete’s foot or another fungus, because it’s easy to spread it to other parts of his or her body—or even to end up with it yourself.) If you subject has arthritis, bunions, corns, or calluses, or if his or her toes are misshapen for any reason, be very gentle and careful. Avoid handling ingrown toenails, as they can be quite p...

Trigeminal Neuralgia Condition Massage Treatments

Imagine
Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) causes sudden, severe facial nerve pain. The pain can last from just a few seconds to two minutes each time and attacks can follow in quick succession. An episode of multiple attacks could last for several hours. Symptoms usually gradually increase and worsen over time. In most cases it only affects one side of the face (unilateral), more commonly the right side. Rarely, people with trigeminal neuralgia have pain on both sides of their face (bilateral). The pain is often described as an electric shock, or a stabbing or piercing pain. Historically TN was commonly known as the “suicide disease” because of the numbers taking their own lives because of the pain in the days before there were any effective treatments. Trigeminal neuralgia is considered to be among “the most excruciatingly painful conditions known to medical practice.” The trigeminal nerve is one of 12 pairs of nerves known as the cranial nerves. The trigeminal nerve is the fifth and largest ...

Massage Techniques: Abs and Chest

Imagine
The abdominal muscles (or “abs”) are actually made up of four separate muscles: the internal and external obliques, the rectus abdominis, and the transversus abdominis. Together, these muscles help us stand upright, twist, turn, and bend. Many professional massage therapists don’t include ab massage in a full-body massage because it’s a soft, vulnerable part of the body, and for some people, having that area worked can bring up feelings and emotions. Always use light, gentle pressure when massaging the abs. The chest is comprised of two muscles, the pectoralis major and the pectoralis minor. Those muscles allow us to make hugging and pushing motions. CAUTION Do not massage someone who is pregnant or who has high blood pressure or gastrointestinal (GI) issues. An ab massage will probably be uncomfortable for someone who has recently had a heavy meal. At mobile massage London we avoid this. Begin with the standard effleurage warm-up, but this time use an even gentler touch. ...
Imagine
If the threat, or perceived threat, persists, then the body also begins to release cortisol. Again, this is a critical function, cortisol being responsible for helping to regulate blood pressure and the immune system, and assisting balancing insulin to keep the blood sugar level normal, and generally helping the body to respond to stress. However, cortisol can also interfere with the function of neurotransmitters, the chemicals used by brain cells to communicate with each other. Too much cortisol can impair long-term memory, and people who have been in very stressful situations may have “gaps” in what happened, as the brain has been overwhelmed and has not been able to fully lay down the long-term memories. Our bodies are equipped to deal with all of this in short bursts: as the sympathetic nervous system releases the fight or flight response, so the parasympathetic nervous system will calm it down. However, the release of adrenalin is a much more effective and faster response ...

Back Massage London

Imagine
Ensure that you work all the way down from the top of the shoulders to the sacrum at the base of the spine, but avoid placing your hands underneath the client’s underwear. Repeat four or five times. Now check if the area at the back of the shoulder blade is tight—ask your clients to put their hand behind their back so that the shoulder blade is a little raised. Use a pillow to support the arm so that the clients do not need to hold the arm up themselves. If you are working with people with multiple sclerosis or Down syndrome, always ask them to move their arm into this position themselves so that you do not overstretch by assisting them in the move. If clients cannot raise their arm up to their back you can simply ask them to place their arm on the massage table next to their body. You should be able to either see or feel the shoulder blade, and you will be working on the area inside this. Using the flat of your thumb, simply press down so that your thumb moves underneath the edge...
